After retiring from Centene Corporation, Miriam Jordan was looking for a new way to stay connected to her community. She found exactly that through volunteering at the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
“My sister actually talked me into it because it’s something she’s been doing,” she says of volunteering at the Foodbank. “The first day I came, I’ve been wanting to come back ever since.”
Just six months after she started volunteering, Miriam stepped into a lead volunteer role, helping staff and fellow volunteers wherever needed.
“We basically do whatever they need us to do,” she says.
At one point, she was here almost every day! Today, she spends much of her time at Food on the Move events.
“I help with the dairy, making sure that they have their dairy products,” she says. “Either helping them shop and stuff like that.”
Through Food on the Move, Miriam has been able to connect directly with neighbors.
“That has really been an experience,” she says. “Now we get to see the people, and that has really been eye-opening.”
Six months after saying yes to her sister’s invitation, Miriam is still glad she did. Her willingness to show up helps neighbors across our region access nutritious food.
