Without congressional action to fund the federal governmentby Jan. 30, the federal government will partially shut down on Jan. 31, 2026.

There is no threat of funding disruption to SNAP, WIC, TEFAP, CSFP, and other child nutrition programs, including in-school and after-school meal programs, following passage of the FY26 agriculture appropriations bill.

A prolongedpartialshutdowncouldlead to many federal employees,active-duty military membersand people who work for a federal contractor not receiving their expected paychecks, which could jeopardize their ability to afford the food they need to thrive and cover other household expenses. This would come just a few months after the longest full government shutdown in history, which caused manycivilianfederalworkersand employees of contractorsto miss multiple paychecks. While federal employeesreceivedback pay, employees of federal contractorsareunlikely to be made whole for missed pay.

During a prolongedpartialshutdown, food banks and meal programs wouldlikely faceincreased demand on top ofalreadysustained high need and the added strain ofrecentcuts tofederal nutrition programs, likeSNAP,and Medicaid. The St. Louis Area Foodbank will continue to show up for our community through free food distributions and working with our network of pantry partners to address need in the hardest hit regions.
