Grace Hill opened its site at 7925
Minnesota on the St. Louis Citys south side in 1962. Mary Christman, the food pantry
director, has worked at Grace Hill for sixteen years, and has seen many changes in the
programs offered. Mary was introduced to Grace Hill many years ago
during a time of crisis in her life. In exchange for services received, Mary was asked to
donate her time to the organization. At that moment, Mary did not realize that Grace Hill
would become her lifes work.
Mrs. Christman first started teaching at Grace Hills school, and
then was diverted into relief work when the flood of 1993 hit St. Louis. Mary, realizing
there was an emerging need for continual food assistance after the flood, started the food
pantry at Grace Hill. Since then, she has recruited invaluable volunteers to help her in
the effort to relieve hunger in her community.
Grace Hill has many other social service programs besides the food
pantry. They offer a paid-training and job placement program, a daycare and head-start
program, senior citizens group, clothing, toys for Christmas, and financial
assistance with utility payments.
During the holidays, many social service organizations find themselves
low on supplies to assist clients because of the extra programs they offer, such as toys
and extra holiday food baskets. This year, however, is especially hard. Due to the shift
in the economy and increased unemployment, Grace Hills Food Pantry is almost empty.
There are only a few cans and dry goods that line the shelves. Mary hopes that will turn
around once people in the community are aware of the situation. She concluded, "If we
do not get more donations of food and money, there simply wont be enough to feed the
need." For more information on how to donate food, money, or clothing please contact
Mary Christman at 314-638-0150.
