The newest member of the St. Louis Area Foodbank is also the focus
of this Agency Spotlight. DART, which is an acronym for Drug and Alcohol
Rehabilitation and Treatment, started serving the community in 1969, under the name Acid
Rescue. It's first function was as a hotline for people in St. Louis to call and
speak with a trained person about recovery. The organization has grown from a mere hotline to three sites in
the St. Louis area. They have an in-patient site located in the City which treats
chemically dependent individuals with a 5-90 day Detox, a Methadone clinic located in St.
Louis County, and an out-patient site in St. Louis City, which helps clients maintain
their sobriety.
Jeff While, who takes care of the
Dietary and Facilities Management at DART, states that unlike other non-profit
organizations, DART has trouble receiving funding through traditional methods. He
says that his "biggest challenge working here is the lack of funding placed in the
are of [dependency] treatement. We are not like a lot of non-profits in fund
raising. People don't seem to think that hosting a black-tie affair is needed for
drug and alcohol treatment, or that a run/walk will help to find a cure, but what people
need to realize is that dependency is a disease and that every time a person comes into a
treatment facility and doesn't relapse, that is a cure."
Jeff also states that besides funding,
DART could use personal care items to help clients improve their self-esteem, and help
them adjust to their new life and improve their chances of maintaining their sobriety.
