Letter Carriers Celebrate 11 Years of Food Drives

For 10 years, letter carriers from around the St. Louis region have annually gathered donated food from patrons on their route for one of the largest food drives in the nation.  The National Association of Letter Carriers Local Branch 343, which serves most of the region, has collected 2,558,593 pounds of food in these 10 years.  For the first 10 years, the drive was coordinated by Ken Meyer of Local Branch 343.  Now, he has passed the baton to Bill Lister, Vice President, Financial Secretary of the Branch.

According to Bill, the carriers love doing the food drive because it is a way for them to be involved as a group for a specific cause. Many carriers see it as a great way to serve their community since they visit every house almost every day of the week. "Some letter carriers are really committed to getting the word out by delivering flyers once or twice before the pick-up date," said Lister. "Others come in on their day off to help at the collection sites or to drive a vehicle alongside of a walking letter carrier to help transport the donations."

The Foodbank wants to thank the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 343 for their dedication and hard work for the past 10 years.  And of course, we’re looking forward to the second 10 years, starting this May 10.
