The upper classmen at Villa Duchesne/Oak Hill School are a shinging example of what happens when you think big!

The Villa Duchesne Service Club has volunteered at the St. Louis Area Foodbank, working in our Repackaging Center to box corn for distribution to our member agencies.  Club president Hilary Mattis decided that this fall would be a good time to hold a food drive for the Foodbank.  The club set an aggressive goal -- to collect 10,000 cans of food from a student body that numbers around 375 students.  That's more than 25 cans per student!

They didn't quite reach 10,000 cans -- but they did collect 9,862!  According to Hilary, some students brought in more than 300 cans individually that they had collected form friends and neighbors!  The drive, which was publicized at school through posters and collection barrels at building entrances, lasted six weeks.

"I'm really proud of our student body," says Hilary.  "If less than 400 kids can raise that many cans of food, I can imagine how much a big company can raise.  I keep hearing in the news that donations to food pantries are down because people have been making donations to Sept. 11 relief efforts instead -- so this was really a good time to do it.

The St. Louis Area Foodbank thanks the Villa Duchesne 7th through 12th grade students.  For more information or assistance in holding a food drive, please call Lenora Young at 314.383.3335, ext. 3101 or send her an email at lyoung@stlfoodbank.org.
