Each year, Clayton High School 9th graders participate in the school's "Respect & Responsibility Day," which takes students out of the classroom and into their community to give them a sense of the importance of service to others.  The St. Louis Area Foodbank was pleased to once again be selected as one of six sites at which students provided volunteer services.  This year, 40 students worked for five hours in our Repackaging Center, sorting and repackaging food products and personal care items.

"We try to demonstrate to the students that they have a responsibility to the larger community," says Larry Baker, a history teacher who is part of the school's teacher advisory program.  The program hopes to spark an ongoing commitment to volunteerism among Clayton High School students.  Perhaps the best indication of the success of "Respect & Responsibility Day" is this comment from 9th grader Gussie Matthews as she left the St. Louis Area Foodbank -- "I wish we could do this more often."

The St. Louis Area Foodbank is pleased to have been selected by these students and greatly appreciates their efforts.   We can always use the help of volunteers.  Please call us at 314.423.6100 if you're interested in organizing a volunteer opportunity for your school.
