St. Louis Area Foodbank opens recently acquired state-of-the-art food distribution center on National Hunger Awareness Day

Representatives from pantries with over 20 years of active partnership with the Foodbank received first distributions from newly acquired facility

The St. Louis Area Foodbank recently acquired a 92,000-square-foot facility near the Earth City Business Park and will opened distribution to its 500+ food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters on National Hunger Awareness Day – Tuesday, June 5, 2007.

In honor of the their longstanding partnership with the St. Louis Area Foodbank, the first items distributed from the new facility were picked up by the St. Nicholas Food Pantry which serves St. Louis City and Lutheran Family & Child Food Pantry which serves southwestern Illinois.  Both agencies have partnered with the Foodbank for more than 20 consecutive years.

Since 1975, the St. Louis Area Foodbank has served as the community’s premiere hunger-relief organization.  The organization distributes more than 13 million pounds of food each year through more than 500 community partners serving those in need throughout the bi-state area The acquisition of this larger facility will enable the Foodbank to immediately increase distribution 8-10% annually.

· New Beginnings ... New Solutions

It became a sad day when lack of adequate warehouse space prevented the Foodbank from acquiring available food products.  Product donations to food banks across the country have increased 29 percent since 2002, but our distribution has remained essentially flat - between 11 and 13 million pounds.  It was clearly time for us to find a new solution to meeting growing demands, and we found it in an existing 92,000 square foot facility at 70 Corporate Woods Drive in the Earth City Business District.
