St. Louis Area Foodbank and The Steak n Shake Company feed hungry families in Missouri
173,000 STEAKBURGER patties are donated to 78 food banks; 19,000 in Missouri

ST. LOUIS (April 14, 2004) – America’s Second Harvest announces the donation of 173,000 Steak n Shake STEAKBURGER patties to help feed the hungry in 18 states. Seventy-eight America’s Second Harvest food banks are receiving STEAKBURGER patties – with 19,000 going to five Missouri food banks – thanks to the success of Steak n Shake’s recent TAKHOMACARD gift card program. As part of the program, the 400-store restaurant chain agreed to donate STEAKBURGER patties to America’s Second Harvest for every qualifying TAKHOMACARD purchase.

Steak n Shake donated more than 19,000 STEAKBURBERS to Missouri food banks to help combat the problem of hunger.

Frank Finnegan, executive director of the St. Louis Area Foodbank, said, “Thanks to the tens of thousands who purchased gift cards during the holiday season and to the generosity of Steak n Shake and its associates, Missouri food banks are providing 19,000 meals to people in need. Feeding the hungry is an enormous challenge for our communities, and corporations like Steak n Shake are making a difference in the battle to make sure all Americans are adequately fed every day.”

Peter Dunn, president and CEO of The Steak n Shake Company and a member of the Board for America’s Second Harvest, said, “As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, the management and associates of Steak n Shake want to give back to the communities that have made us so successful. We hope our donation of STEAKBURGER patties will spur others, corporations and individuals alike, to consider giving whatever they can to help feed the hungry.

“With the Missouri poverty rate at 10 percent, many people go hungry,” Dunn said. “Steak n Shake recognizes our donation is only a small step in relation to the size of this challenge statewide, but we are proud to do what we can to help feed Americans in need.”

St. Louis Area Foodbank, one of five food banks in Missouri receiving the STEAKBURGER patty donation, is a non-profit food distribution center for organizations that feed hungry people throughout 14 counties in Eastern Missouri and 12 counties in Southwestern Illinois. In 2003, the food bank distributed 12.8 million pounds of food to more than 450 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.

Steak n Shake is a full-service restaurant serving a core menu of its famous STEAKBURGER sandwiches,  thin 'n crispy French fries and old-fashioned, hand-dipped milk shakes.
