St. Louis Area Foodbank

Bert Rosen Hunger-Relief Award

See Pictures Below

Opening Remarks - By Frank Finnegan, Executive Director

Since our beginning, the Foodbank has been blessed with a wealth of volunteer leadership.  For the past 24 years, scores of volunteers have joined forces with the Foodbank.  They have donated their time, their talent and their funds.  One person more than any other embodies the spirit of our volunteers.  Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we honor Mr. Bert Rosen - a tireless advocate for those in need.

Bert's involvement dates back 15 years and his mark is indelibly stamped on the St. Louis Area Foodbank.  He has served as a Board Director, an Officer and a President.  At one time or another, he has chaired each of our Board Committees.  Throughout his tenure, he has been our most active fund-raiser.

Speaking at the annual conference for America's Second Harvest, Marian Wright Edelman stated that all movements involve a variety of people.  To win the fight against hunger, we will need to enlist all of the resources we can muster.  We will need an army of sparrows, a platoon of geese and a few eagles.  Sparrows are plentiful throughout the country.  They live in all of our communities.  It takes an army of sparrows to contribute to food drives and volunteer at food pantries and soup kitchens.  Sparrows man the ranks and each contribute in some significant way.

We also need a platoon of geese.  Geese forge the way for the rest of us.  They push us to do more and go further than we think we can.  When geese get tired, they fall back in line to rest, allowing another to lead the way.

Finally, we need a few eagles.  Eagles soar above.  They point the way and motivate us to do more.  Through their actions, eagles give us hope and show us how to achieve our goals.  This award is intended to honor those eagles - and no person is more deserving than Bert Rosen.
