Hunger in America

Once upon a time, a job was a means to a livelihood.   But, in recent years, so many jobs pay so little that people simply cannot earn enough to survive on, no matter how hard they work or how well the budget.  Suppose the best you could secure is a 32-hour-per-week job, paying $6.15 per hour.  Your annual income would be: $6.15 x 52 = $10,233.60
Annual Income

$10,234

...you'd be left $1 in debt to cover a year's worth of...

- food
- Medical/Dental care
- Insurance
- Child care
- School tuition, supplies & fees
- Gifts/Holidays
- Clothing
- Hobbies/Entertainment
- Savings (Retirement/rainy day)
- Debt Payments
- Books/subscriptions
- Charitable/Church
...and all else.

If 15% of that goes for FICA and taxes $1,535
And $400 a month goes for rent or mortgage payments $4,800
And $125 a month goes for utilities (heat, light, phone, etc.) $1,500
And $50 a month goes for all personal hygiene, laundry, hair care, and home upkeep needs $600
Total $10,235

When available incomes cannot or do not exceed normal and reasonable expenses, the resulting gap translates into people doing without.  When the gap is small and the options are easy -- for example, foregoing restaurant meals and movies -- the shortfall is barely perceptible.  But in at least one in ten American households annually, the gap becomes too large to cover without external help.  That is why we have foodbanks and other agencies which help in those situations.  So that at least the family can eat.
