St. Louis (November 22, 2004) -- Upper School
students at MICDS (Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day
School) joined together recently to form a “Turkey Train” during a
special all-school assembly. Each student brought a frozen
turkey to school for the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
Upper School students formed a line outside Founders’ Court at the Upper
School to across campus at McDonnell Athletic Center. There,
Foodbank trucks were on hand waiting to receive the turkeys as
they were passed one-by-one from student to student.
Lower and Middle School students (representing grades JK-8) were encouraged to bring canned goods. At 10:00 a.m., following a short program inside McDonnell Athletic Center, these students – led by
St. Louis Cardinals mascot, Fredbird – formed their own train
and marched around the track to deliver the canned goods to Foodbank
trucks.
The “Turkey Train” was designed to provide a meaningful community service
activity that could truly make a difference for area families in
need. Close to 600 turkeys and several hundred canned food items were collected
for the Foodbank. The turkeys and canned goods will be used to help
feed families in need this holiday season.
MICDS is a nonprofit, independent, preparatory school for students
in junior kindergarten through grade 12, offering non-sectarian
education to qualified students regardless of national origin, race
or religion.
The St. Louis Area Foodbank is a non-profit food distribution center
for organizations that feed hungry people throughout Eastern
Missouri and Southwestern Illinois. Trough its network of more than
450 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and emergency feeding
programs, the St. Louis Area Foodbank distributed nearly 13 million
pounds of food in 2003 to the local community in need. |
