LOCAL DESIGN/BUILD FIRMS JOIN FORCES TO HELP FIGHT HUNGER IN ST. LOUIS

3rd Annual CANSTRUCTION Competition Kicks Off at Saint Louis Galleria

Students from the Washington University School of Architecture - all members of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) - built a 5' x 10' "Harvest for the Hungry" structure made entirely out of canned goods at Saint Louis Galleria's Atrium Dining Court. The canned goods used for this structure were donated by Schnuck Markets, Inc. and will be distributed to those in need by the St. Louis Area Foodbank and the Jewish Food Pantry.ST. LOUIS (October 30, 2002) – Cans of much-needed food for those in need are being used to create design wonders during the 3rd annual CANSTRUCTION competition at Saint Louis Galleria.

Local architecture, construction, and engineering firms have built structures made entirely of canned goods and will have them on display November 6th through the 14th.  This year’s participants include Horner & Shifrin, McClure Engineering, Boa Construction and a group of students from the Washington University School of Architecture. Each five-member team is creating their own structure competing to be selected by a local panel of judges for awards such as "Best Meal" and "Best Use of Labels." The winners will be announced during a gala at the Galleria hosted by KEZK-FM 102.5 morning show host Ed Goodman.

Once the competition has concluded, the local winners will go on to compete nationally against structures in 50 other participating cities. The cans used to create the structures will be donated to the St. Louis Area Foodbank and the Jewish Food Pantry for distribution to families in need this holiday season. "Our 350+ food pantries and soup kitchens have been telling us more and more people are coming to them for food assistance," stated Frank Finnegan, executive director of St. Louis Area Foodbank. "With colder weather approaching and the economy the way it is right now, I'm afraid we may not have enough product coming in to meet the rising need. The food used for these structures is certainly going to help."

The nearly four tons of food used to build these structures was provided at cost by Schnuck Markets Inc. and the event is underwritten with support from Enterprise Leasing, Widman Construction, Indox Services and Saint Louis Galleria.

The event is sponsored each year by the local chapters of the Society of Design Administration (SDA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2001, the nationwide event collected 1,145,728 pounds of food.
