ST. LOUIS (November 10, 2000)
Where can you find a replica of "White Castle," a gigantic box of
"McDonalds" fries and a ten-foot high blender? Well, its not in
Bigfoots kitchen its CANSTRUCTION® 2000 an event including canstructures
designed by local architects, engineers, and construction firms using only assorted canned
goods and boxes and you can see it for yourself now through November 16th
at Saint Louis Galleria.
On Thursday, November 9th, awards were given
to structures in numerous categories. The winners were selected by a panel of celebrity
judges including local design, media, and education professionals. (See below for pictures
of the award-winning structures)
A pre-event structure entitled "Ol CAN
River" was built by Mackey Mitchell Associates and was not included in the
competition. The more than 40,000 pounds of cans used to build the structures will be
donated to the St. Louis Area Foodbank and the Jewish Food Pantry. Also, through November
16th, collection barrels will be located at the Concierge desk of Saint Louis
Galleria for canned food donations to benefit both organizations.
"Now is a very needy time," said Frank
Finnegan, executive director of the St. Louis Area Foodbank. "With winter and the
holidays fast approaching, our food pantries and soup kitchens are going to see an
increase in those needing assistance and these 40,000 cans will have a tremendous impact
on the less-fortunate in our community," concluded Finnegan.
Local sponsors of this inaugural event include Service
Reprographics, Saint Louis Galleria, Firstar Corporation, Schnucks Supermarkets, St. Louis
Foundation for Architecture, Datamax Office Systems, Enterprise Leasing, and Mackey
Mitchell Associates.
The national event has been in existence since 1993 and
collected more than 775,000 pounds of food last year for hunger-relief organizations
across the country. The nationwide goal for CANSTRUCTION® 2000 is 1 million pounds. The event is sponsored
nationally by DuPont Corian, Architectural Digest, RTKL, and Turner Construction. |
